Watch Your Cups

This actually happened yesterday, September 16, 2010.

Taken from my FB page:

This morning, at 8:15am, I went to the AyalaLife FGU Building branch of 7-11 (the one at the back entrance), and bought a cherry slurpee. Other than the flavor being a bit weird, I didn’t think anything was off. While working, I drank about 3/4ths of it, then forgot the rest. It proceeded to melt, and I peeked in a bit after lunch to see if I had any left, only to find that at the bottom of the liquid was a SEMI-RUSTY, BROKEN SAFETY PIN.

WOW.

GROSS.

I immediately showed it to my officemates, who saw for themsel ves that yes, there WAS a broken piece of metal in my slurpee. They insisted I go downstairs to talk to the manager of the branch. I was accompanied by Edsel and Krishna when we talked to the staff. The manager was not present. But the staff was there and we told them about it. It turns out that the safety pin had been used to HOLD THE NOZZLE OF THE MACHINE TOGETHER. …okay. More gross.

They could do no more than say that there was really nothing they could do about it, because the nozzle was broken, they (or rather, that one particular staff member) just tried to put a “band-aid” fix on it, since apparently lots of people… bought slurpees. (Can I say how ridiculous that is? The fact that the pin was IN MY DRINK clearly shows that safety pins and slurpee machines are not meant to go together). At first, they were saying that the pin was just an accident and it was just overlooked when I was getting my slurpee but the point is—WHY WAS IT EVEN THERE TO BEGIN WITH?

The manager wasn’t present. But we had his staff call him. I spoke to him and he was apologizing about what happened and he apologizes in behalf of his staff. He says that he had even told his staff not to make such makeshift repairs becaus…e, well, it was really not a good idea (can’t stress this enough).

What distresses me more was that the staff member who had originally put the pin there said that they do the same on OTHER 7-11 BRANCHES. I told the manager as much, and he could only apologize again. He said he would forward my complaint to the head office (and I’ll do the same in a bit) and basically that was all that happened.

I can’t believe I had been drinking out of that cup all day. >_<

EDIT 9/17/10:

Received a message in facebook from the Category Manager of 7-11. He hugely apologizes and tells me that they are fully investigating the matter so it won’t happen again, and tells me not to hesitate to call if I have further concerns. I really hope they don’t do this sort of thing (the “band-aid” repair) anymore. >_< Someone could get seriously ill.
